How to Help Children with Mental Problems

According to a nonprofit advocacy organization - Mental Health America -, one in five children in America has to spend life with different types of mental health issues in children. Not all of this number receives treatment and an untold number may go untreated. Getting in legal trouble, failure in school and attempting suicide can be an increased risk if they do not get treatment early.


Mental health issues in children that happen to children and adolescents may have different types and come with different symptoms. The most common mental health problems that affect children including:
  • Learning and communication disorders
  • Affective (mood) disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Schizophrenia
  • Tic disorders
  • Disruptive behavior disorders
  • Pervasive development disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Elimination disorders
If you find one or more disorders of mental health issues in children, you may need to consult your doctor to give your children early treatment or therapy. You can observe these signs in your children to know whether your children need for professional help or not. They are repeated refusal to go to school or to take part in normal activities, poor grades despite strong efforts, decline in school performance, hyperactivity or fidgeting, constant worry or anxiety, persistent nightmares, frequent temper tantrums, persistent disobedience or aggression, sadness or irritability, and depression.

If you are afraid that mental health issues in children happen to your family, you can take the following steps to help you identify the problems and determine the best methods to help them.

ü  Watch for behavioral signs of mental health issues in children such as anxiety, hyperactivity, persistent nightmares, refusal to participate in activities or attend school, aggression, temper tantrums, sadness, disobedience, irritability and isolation. Parents and family members should remember that early intervention is critical to treatment.
ü  Look for medical help if you find the signs and ask your pediatrician to do medical testing to determine what thing to do.
ü  Consult a mental health professional to identify the specific type of mental disorder so that you can give your children the right treatment.
ü  Create a treatment plan in accordance with your mental-health professional recommendation. The recommendation can be some instances prescribe medication, psychotherapy, or behavioral therapy.


However, it is essential to identify mental health issues in children early to know the type and determine the right treatment.
